Upon her first visit to Lebanon, Malala Yousefzai opened her first education site for Syrian female refugees in December 2014. After a needs assessment, Bar Elias was chosen as the location because of its significant number of out-of-school adolescent females. The school began construction in May 2015 and today serves as resource center for the girls. The school offers secondary education based on the official Lebanese curriculum and protection programs that aim to build resilience and provide psychosocial support for stressed and traumatized adolescent girls while also preparing them to integrate into the Lebanese public education system while providing vocational and life skill training through sewing/embroidery, computer literacy and nursing training and hairdressing. Today we have two Malala secondary all-girls schools.
