May Makarem received her bachelor’s in History at the Université Libanaise and taught at Carmel Saint Joseph for two years. Due to the Lebanese civil war, she left Lebanon for Nice, France and Los Angeles, USA. She returned to Beirut to become a journalist at the L’Orient-Le Jour focusing on Lebanese heritage and architecture. She is an executive committee member of the Beiteddine Festival and a founding member of the child protection NGO Himaya.
